“‘Chungking Express’ is a breezy little Hong Kong movie that has more life, energy, humanity and sheer visual zing than most other shows you’ll see in a month or so.” ( Chicago Tribune)ĭoors 8:30 pm | Movie 9:00 pm *Start time subject to change. “Even if all it had to offer were writer-director Wong Kar-wai’s thrillingly distinctive visuals, Chungking Express would be well worth watching happily, its thoughtfully drawn characters and naturalistic performances also pack a potent dramatic wallop.” ( Rotten Tomatoes) “ hypnotic images of love and loss finally wear down your resistance as seemingly discordant sights and sounds coalesce into a radiant, crazy quilt.” ( Rolling Stone Magazine)
Anything goes in Wong’s gloriously shot and utterly unexpected charmer, which cemented the sex appeal of its gorgeous stars and forever turned canned pineapple and the Mamas and the Papas’ “California Dreamin’” into tokens of romantic longing. Two heartsick Hong Kong cops ( Takeshi Kaneshiro and Tony Leung), both jilted by ex-lovers, cross paths at the Midnight Express take-out restaurant stand, where the ethereal pixie waitress Faye ( Faye Wong) works. Leonard missed another really good movie here. The whiplash, double-pronged CHUNGKING EXPRESS is one of the defining works of nineties cinema and the film that made Hong Kong filmmaker Wong Kar Wai an instant icon. Two heart broken cops finding love in all the wrong places. I thought the actors were all dynamic and charismatic.Īnd I also enjoyed the plots of both segments.
I would give this movie 3 stars just for the style itself.īut I also really enjoyed the two quirky stories about two policeman and the women that they fall in love with. There are a lot of reasons I really like this movie. That's why I think it so important that movies like this get proper ratings. There are so many movies that are 3 stars or higher, it is hard to keep up with them. I might have missed this movie when it came out twenty two years ago because of Leonard's 2 1/2 star rating. In his review Leonard says: "Light, funny, and offbeat though the second tale goes on far too long."Ī very stylish comedy drama from one of the world's great directors Kar-Wai Wong. Rotten Tomatoes Rating : 90% (with critics) 94% (with audience)Ĭritics Consensus: Even if all it had to offer were writer-director Wong Kar-wai's thrillingly distinctive visuals, Chungking Express would be well worth watching happily, its thoughtfully drawn characters and naturalistic performances also pack a potent dramatic wallop.
